NAFDAC Shuts Warehouse in Sokoto for Food Safety Violations

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down the warehouse of DEE-LITE IMPEX Distribution Co. Ltd in Sokoto State due to serious violations of food safety standards, as the Agency intensifies its enforcement operation.

The facility situated on Coca-Cola Road near the Western Bypass was found to be distributing 5,347 bags of raw Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) meant for industrial use, yet marketed as ready-to-use items. This unlawful activity exceeded NAFDAC’s authorized limits, prompting worries about potential public health hazards.

On Monday night, the agency announced on its official website that subsequent investigations had uncovered and led to the confiscation of unregistered items.

These included 193 cartons of Orange Fruity and 71 cartons of Toffeeman Coconut Bites, which had been distributed without proper authorization.

“This confiscation highlights our dedication to safeguarding Nigerians from unregulated and possibly dangerous products.” — Dr. Monica Eimunjeze, Acting Director-General, NAFDAC

A follow-up inspection at the Sokoto Old Market uncovered another 235 bags of FUFENG MSG stored in various shops, which were promptly put under regulatory hold.

A representative from the company has been held for questioning, and NAFDAC has vowed to implement tougher penalties and increased oversight to avoid similar violations in the future.

The agency has assured Nigerians of its commitment to maintaining health and safety standards throughout the food supply chain.
