The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a fraudulent operation at the Lagos Trade Fair Complex, where expired alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages were being revalidated for resale. The illicit activity poses severe health risks to consumers.
During a raid conducted by NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, two individuals were apprehended in the act of altering expiration dates.
The agency disclosed this in a statement on its official website on Friday, revealing that the individuals were caught removing expired labels from beverages and replacing them with counterfeit ones.
NAFDAC officials seized date-marking tools, newly printed labels, and piles of discarded expired labels during the operation. The store, believed to be the center of the activity, was sealed off, and its owner, considered the prime suspect, was arrested for further questioning.
“This unethical practice not only jeopardizes public health but also undermines consumer trust,” a NAFDAC official stated. “We urge the public to remain vigilant during purchases, especially during the festive season.”
Consumers are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office or through its official communication channels.
