The Nigerian Red Cross, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), has initiated a comprehensive response plan to combat the ongoing Mpox outbreak in the country.
Dr. Mannir Jega, Director of Health and Care for the Nigerian Red Cross, announced this today in Kaduna during a training session for health workers from 15 states.
He highlighted the increasing concern over Mpox, a global health emergency declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Africa CDC.
“Nigeria, unfortunately, is among the affected countries, with 108 confirmed cases reported across 27 states.
“To address this, the Red Cross is focusing on preparedness strategies, particularly in low-burden states, to reduce transmission and protect vulnerable populations,” he further stated.
The training program aims to equip health workers with the necessary skills to respond effectively to the outbreak.
Participants will learn about risk communication, community engagement, and case management.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is also actively involved in supporting the response efforts. Joan Ojukwu, Health and Care Officer at IFRC, emphasized the organization’s commitment to providing technical support and raising awareness.
IFRC is working with the NCDC to mobilize communities, train community-based disease surveillance officers, and support vaccination efforts. Additionally, they are providing essential materials like banners and information leaflets to enhance public awareness.
The Red Cross and IFRC are taking a multi-faceted approach to combat the Mpox outbreak, focusing on prevention, early detection, and effective response.
