The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed deep concern over the critical sanitation situation in Maiduguri following the devastating floods that affected over a million people.

The organization highlighted the widespread destruction of toilets and wash facilities, leaving a significant portion of the population vulnerable to waterborne diseases.

During the commemoration of World Toilet Day, today, in Maiduguri, UNICEF’s WASH Manager, Mamita Thakkar, revealed that a staggering 47% of the affected population lacks access to basic sanitation facilities.

This alarming figure exposes a large number of individuals to the risks associated with unsanitary conditions, including cholera and other waterborne diseases.

The floods have exacerbated an already challenging sanitation situation in the region.

The destruction of essential infrastructure has further compromised public health and hygiene, necessitating urgent intervention to prevent the outbreak of diseases.

UNICEF has called for immediate action to restore sanitation facilities and implement effective hygiene promotion campaigns to mitigate the health risks posed by the crisis.
