Fire Razes Plateau Katako Market

Hussaini Kafi in Kano

A devastating fire outbreak engulfed Katako Market in Jos North Local Government Area on Monday morning, leaving numerous traders counting losses.

The inferno, which started in the early hours of the day, consumed several sections of the market, including timber, clothing, and carpentry stalls.

While no casualties were reported, the extent of the damage is significant, with property worth millions of naira reduced to ashes.

Eyewitnesses recounted the frantic efforts of fire service personnel and market traders to contain the blaze, but the rapid spread of the fire hampered their efforts.

The state Gvernor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, visited the market to assess the situation and offer support to the affected traders.

He expressed deep sympathy for the victims and assured them that the state government would work to rebuild the market and provide necessary assistance.

The governor also pledged to address the underlying issues that contribute to frequent fire incidents in the market, such as inadequate firefighting equipment and poor market infrastructure.

Community Concerns

The recurring fire outbreaks at Katako Market have raised concerns about safety standards and emergency response protocols. Local authorities and market leaders have called for urgent measures to prevent future incidents.

As investigations into the cause of the fire continue, the affected traders are grappling with the loss of their livelihoods and seeking support to rebuild their businesses.
