White Button Mushroom Extract May Slow Prostate Cancer Progression

A new study suggests that white button mushroom extract may help slow the progression of prostate cancer by enhancing the effectiveness of immunotherapy.

Researchers from the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in California discovered that the extract reduced immune-suppressing cells in tumours and increased immune cells capable of attacking cancer cells.

The research, published in Clinical and Translational Medicine, dated 18th November 2024, revealed promising results both in mice and human trials.

The study revealed that white button mushroom extract, which contains polysaccharides like β-glucan, could boost the immune system’s ability to fight cancer.

Mice treated with the extract, alongside anti-PD-1 antibodies, showed a stronger inhibition of tumour growth and lived longer than those receiving immunotherapy alone.

Dr. Xiaoqiang Wang, lead author of the study, emphasised that while the results are promising, more research is needed. “Our study is ongoing, and we stress the importance of professional guidance to avoid self-prescribing supplements,” Wang said, noting that white button mushrooms are not FDA-approved as a cancer treatment.

Frédéric A. Meunier, a researcher not involved in the study, praised the findings, calling it “a really impressive study” with potential for delaying prostate cancer progression.

He added, “Mushroom-based compounds could be a promising addition to immunotherapy.”

While the research is still in Phase II trials, scientists are hopeful that understanding the molecular mechanisms behind the immune-boosting effects of β-glucans could lead to broader cancer applications.

For now, Wang suggests incorporating more white button mushrooms into the diet, but urges caution and professional consultation before considering supplements.
