Cholera Outbreak in Plateau, 60 Hospitalised

A cholera outbreak in Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State has claimed one life and hospitalised around 60 others.

The outbreak, which began in Ngyang, Kwalmiya, Banak, and Bakin Kogi, has since spread to Dengi, the LGA’s headquarters.

The Chairman of Kanam LGA, Ayuba Musa, confirmed the incident in a statement released by his spokesperson, Mazadu Ali. “The outbreak has been alarming, and we are taking urgent steps to mitigate the disease,” Ali said.

The local government has launched an extensive public health campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of sanitation and safe drinking water.

“Interactive sessions are being held throughout Dengi to educate residents on preventive measures,” the statement added.

Cholera, which spreads through contaminated water, causes severe diarrhea and dehydration, and can be fatal without prompt treatment.

The local government’s swift response underscores the urgent need for improved sanitation and health education in affected areas.

“We are working hard to reduce the transmission and ensure the safety of our communities,” Ali added. The local government’s campaign also emphasises safe water practices and hygiene to curb further spread of the disease.”
