The Taraba government has taken a significant step towards enhancing healthcare delivery across the state with the recruitment of 300 additional health workers for primary healthcare centers.

The recruitment was made possible by an MOU with GAVI, UNICEF, and the Taraba government on PHCs strengthening.

Dr. Tukura Nyigwa, Executive Secretary of Taraba Primary Health Centers, announced this development in Jalingo on Sunday, attributing the achievement to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the United Nations Children’s Fund, supported by the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation.

This strategic partnership has already yielded positive results, particularly in vaccination efforts. The coverage of Penta 3 vaccine in hard-to-reach areas has increased from 43% to 80%.

Furthermore, the MOU has strengthened the capacity of health personnel at the local government level, ensuring more effective service delivery to rural communities.

The state’s healthcare sector is poised for further growth, with plans underway to recruit an additional 150 personnel to ensure primary healthcare centers are fully functional.

Dr Inyigwa’s statement read in part, “Taraba government has just concluded recruitment of 300 health personnel to boost healthcare service delivery at the PHCs level.

“The recruitment is made possible due to the MOU by GAVI, UNICEF, and the Taraba government on PHCs strengthening.

“The MoU has positively impacted vaccination for children in the hard-to-reach areas with coverage of Penta 3 vaccine from 43 to 80 per cent.”

According to him, the move aims to enhance the quality of service and save lives.

The “Mama to Mama” initiative, which encourages women to advocate for healthcare-seeking behaviors among younger women, has also seen significant success in promoting antenatal care, exclusive breastfeeding, and immunization among rural dwellers.
