FG Unveils Strategy to Boost Agriculture, Ensure Food Security

The Federal Government has outlined a comprehensive strategy to enhance agricultural productivity and secure food supply across the nation.

As stated on its official X account on Monday, this information was revealed during the 46th meeting of the National Council on Agriculture and Food Security, which took place in Calabar, Cross River State.

During the event, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, CON, outlined the government’s priorities, including the provision of essential agricultural inputs to farmers, the repositioning of agricultural institutions, and fostering collaboration among farmers, herders, and communities.

“As priority actions, ongoing tasks include the delivery of agro-inputs to farmers, the repositioning of agricultural institutions, and deepening engagement among farmers, herders, and communities,” Kyari stated.

He further announced plans to strengthen irrigation schemes, improve soil fertility management systems, and establish advanced laboratories in research institutes to boost productivity.

The minister described the council meeting as a crucial forum for reviewing policies and fostering partnerships to advance entrepreneurship and sustainable growth in the agricultural sector.

State governments also pledged their cooperation in achieving these goals. Representing Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu, Deputy Governor Peter Odey emphasized the state’s dedication to supporting smallholder farmers with inputs and financial aid.

“We will continue to collaborate with the Federal Government in implementing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agricultural policies to achieve food and nutritional security,” Odey stated.

Senator Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, highlighted the need to leverage infrastructure, technology, and entrepreneurship to unlock the sector’s potential and promote inclusivity.

The event, attended by state commissioners of agriculture, development partners, and the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, featured awards recognizing outstanding contributions by stakeholders in the sector.

This renewed focus on collaboration and innovation reflects the government’s determination to ensure food security and improve livelihoods across the agricultural value chain.
