AMLSN Urges FG to Prioritize Health Security as National Security

The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) has called on the Nigerian government to recognize health security as a cornerstone of national security.

The association made the call during its 60th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Owerri, Imo State, AMLSN President Dr. Casmir Ifeanyi emphasized that addressing health-related vulnerabilities is critical to the country’s stability and overall well-being.

He argued that national security discussions often neglect the contributions of healthcare professionals, urging their inclusion in strategic security meetings, particularly those led by the National Security Adviser.

“Health security serves as the foundation of national security,” Dr. Ifeanyi stated.

Highlighting the vital role of medical laboratory scientists, he noted that they provide over 70% of information used in medical decision-making and more than 80% in health planning. Dr. Ifeanyi advocated for increased investments in laboratory research and stronger collaboration between states to bolster Nigeria’s health system.

He also praised President Bola Tinubu’s Executive Order promoting local production of diagnostics and pharmaceuticals but called for expedited implementation to ensure affordability and accessibility for Nigerians.

On the Federal Ministry of Health’s measures to prevent brain drain among health workers, Dr. Ifeanyi criticized the strategies as “harsh and ineffective,” arguing that actions like denying leave of absence violate public service regulations and fail to address root causes.

“This policy aims to deter health workers from emigrating instead of addressing the underlying issues,” he said, urging people-focused reforms that comply with existing laws and prioritize the revitalization of Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The AMLSN’s appeal underscores the need for a holistic approach to national security, highlighting the pivotal role of health professionals in safeguarding Nigeria’s future.
