Professor Tim Spector, a renowned dietary expert, has revealed surprising findings on how certain foods can help lower blood pressure.
A study involving 96,000 participants found that yeast extract, a key ingredient in Marmite, is particularly effective in reducing hypertension.
According to Prof Spector, the study’s large sample size provided valuable insights into the link between diet and blood pressure.
Factors such as age, body weight, and gender play a significant role, but certain nutrients can also make a difference.
He explained: “Age and your body weight are the two biggest factors. You can’t change your age. You can to some extent change your body weight.”
Potassium, in particular, was found to be crucial, with studies showing it to be more important than salt in lowering blood pressure.
Surprisingly, foods rich in potassium include crisps, coffee whitener, Bombay mix, and pistachio nuts, in addition to expected sources like bananas and vegetables.
Prof Spector emphasized that not all crisps are created equal, with those fried in sunflower oil being a good option. Other potassium-rich foods include tomato purees, power shakes, dried fruits, and quinoa.
While medications, exercise, and stopping smoking are well-known methods for reducing blood pressure, dietary changes can also play a significant role.
Prof Spector encouraged individuals to focus on increasing potassium intake, citing it as a simple and effective step.
By incorporating potassium-rich foods into their diet, individuals can take a proactive approach to managing their blood pressure. As Prof Spector noted,
“Most plants, vegetables, and fruits have pretty good levels of potassium,” offering a wide range of options for those looking to make a positive change.
