In Nigeria, approximately 140,000 children aged 0 to 14 are living with HIV, according to new data from the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).
Despite ongoing government efforts, the country faces significant challenges in combating the virus, with around 15,000 deaths related to AIDS recorded each year.
In a statement shared on the agency’s website on Friday, the Director-General of NACA, Temitope Ilori, highlighted the difficulty in preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV, a key issue fueling the high infection rates. “We continue to see gaps in our response to this epidemic,” Ilori said.
In 2023, Nigeria reported 75,000 new HIV infections and 45,000 AIDS-related deaths, further underscoring the urgent need for strengthened prevention and treatment programs.
