The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to combat drug abuse and counterfeit products in Nigeria.
The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), in a statement signed by the Director of Media and Advocacy, NDLEA, Femi Babafemi on Wednesday, described the partnership as a “significant turning point” in their shared endeavour to improve operational effectiveness, protect public health, and guarantee community safety.
Marwa emphasized that NDLEA and NAFDAC play vital roles in citizens’ health and safety, and deepening their collaboration will ensure robust protection for public health and well-being.
The MoU will establish a framework for sharing vital intelligence, facilities, and expertise to effectively address the intertwined challenges of drug abuse and counterfeit products.
Marwa also noted that this partnership will align their strategies and resources, making them better equipped to tackle the growing menace of drug abuse and ensure only safe, approved, and genuine products reach consumers.
Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, aligned with Marwa’s position, stressing that stakeholders cannot afford to work in silos on issues bordering on substance abuse, illicit drug trafficking, and public health.
She highlighted the far-reaching consequences of illicit drugs, including violence, terrorism, banditry, spouse abuse, and health conditions.
Adeyeye emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “We cannot afford to work in silo in Nigeria. We have sister agencies that work in silo, including NAFDAC. We are just changing the culture now. Working as focus groups to deal with problems, to solve problems.”
