The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has dismantled an illegal herbal medicine factory in Mararaba, Nasarawa State.
NAFDAC announced via it social media platforms that the facility, located in Amina Plaza, was discovered to be producing unsafe and unregistered herbal mixtures.
“Acting on a tip from a concerned citizen, our team found hazardous products that could cause severe health issues such as liver cirrhosis and kidney failure,” stated Tamanuwa Andrew, Deputy Director of Investigation and Enforcement.
The operation led to the sealing of the factory and the arrest of suspects involved.
The factory’s owner claimed his herbal mixtures were effective and harmless, despite having operated for six months.
However, he admitted to purchasing products with counterfeit NAFDAC registration numbers from Onitsha and denied any involvement in production.
“Rest assured, he will face prosecution once our investigation concludes,” NAFDAC stated.
In a related effort, NAFDAC also seized counterfeit and substandard drugs valued at over N20 million in Abuja’s Wuse market.
The seized items included tramadol, aphrodisiacs, and synthetic medications, reflecting the agency’s commitment to curbing the spread of dangerous products.
“NAFDAC’s ongoing efforts highlight the importance of protecting public health from harmful substances,” the agency added.
