A devastating fire swept through a furniture market in Ojota, Lagos State, on Thursday, destroying goods valued in millions of naira.

The blaze, triggered by an electrical surge from a nearby transformer, began at 1 pm and quickly spread through several shops.

According to Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, firefighters responded promptly, containing the inferno and preventing further damage.

Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported, but the fire ravaged furniture items worth millions. Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and Ambulance Service, collaborated to curb the spread.

The Permanent Secretary narrated, “Upon the arrival of the Tiger Response Team at the incident scene by 1404hrs, it was discovered that several shops used for the production and sale of furniture items were engulfed by fire.

“Investigations conducted by the LRT revealed that the immediate cause of the inferno was an electricity power surge from the power transformer stationed beside the shops.”

“Fortunately, no casualties were recorded at the incident scene and no injuries were sustained due to the incident. However, properties worth a fortune were destroyed by the inferno.”

The Oke-Osanyintolu said the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency managed crowd hostilities and ensured the situation was brought under control.
