FG Offers Free Caesarean Sections to Tackle Maternal Mortality in Nigeria

In a significant health policy shift, Nigeria’s government has launched an initiative to provide free Cesarean Sections (C-sections) nationwide, aiming to reduce maternal mortality rates across the country.

This program, led by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, comes as part of the Maternal Mortality Reduction Initiative (MAMII), a nationwide effort to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes.

Via its official X handle,On Thursday, Prof. Pate emphasized the urgent need for accessible healthcare for women, stating, “No woman should lose her life simply because she can’t afford a C-section.” This initiative aims to offer free surgical assistance and reinforce primary healthcare services to lower maternal mortality rates across Nigeria.

The MAMII initiative is gaining widespread support from national and international stakeholders. “Traditional institutions and communities are at the heart of health reforms. We’re fully in!” said HRH Dr. Haliru Yahaya, Emir of Shonga. Other leaders, including Dr. Walter Mulombo of the WHO and Trina Haque of the World Bank, have pledged ongoing support and resources to ensure the program’s success.
