NLC Decries Lack of Justice One Year After Ajaero’s Brutality

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has voiced its dismay over the continued impunity surrounding the brutal attack on its president, Comrade Joe Ajaero, one year ago in Owerri, Imo State.

“It is unacceptable that, after a year, no one has been held accountable,” said Benson Upah, NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs.

Ajaero was violently assaulted and left for dead by state agents while leading a peaceful protest against unpaid salaries and pensions.

Upah revealed that Ajaero required over six months of intensive medical treatment, both in Nigeria and abroad, to recover his sight and bodily functions.

Despite this ordeal, Ajaero remains unwavering in his commitment to advocate for the rights of Nigerian workers. “We will not be silenced or intimidated,” Ajaero stated, emphasising his determination to continue the fight for justice.

The NLC expressed grave concerns regarding ongoing harassment faced by Ajaero, including police invitations to respond to allegations of terrorism financing and treason.

The union pointed out the contradiction in the National Security Adviser’s previous promises to investigate the attack.

“Justice for Ajaero is justice for all Nigerian workers,” Upah added, reiterating the NLC’s call for accountability.
