In response to recent concerns raised by the Nigerian National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), German skincare company Beiersdorf has confirmed that its Nivea Black and White Invisible Roll-on deodorant containing the chemical Lilial™ has not been sold in Nigeria since 2022.

The clarification followed a warning from NAFDAC, which urged Nigerians to avoid using the product over potential health risks, including reproductive harm and skin irritation. Beiersdorf, owner of the Nivea brand, responded on the social media platform X, stating, “Our entire NIVEA portfolio has been reformulated to exclude Lilial well ahead of the EU regulation that came into effect.”

Beiersdorf noted that the flagged product’s batch number, 93529610, had an expiration date of January 2022, prior to the enforcement of the European Union’s new safety regulations. The company added that it proactively stopped distributing any products containing the chemical, officially known as 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde, well before EU restrictions were applied.

The company emphasized its commitment to safety standards, ensuring that all its global products, including those in Nigeria, comply with the latest regulatory guidelines.
