Amid widespread protests against bad governance in Nigeria, concerns are growing over the detention of minors, including two teenagers, for over 80 days. Protests erupted from August 1 to August 10, leading to the arrest of over 76 individuals across cities like Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, and Sokoto.
Four detainees, including minors Yahaya,a 14 years and Muktar Ishak Alhassan, 16, collapsed during a recent court appearance at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday.
Eyewitnesses reported the distressing scene, raising alarm over the treatment of young protesters.
Amnesty International has condemned the arrests, labeling the detention of minors as “illegal and unlawful.”
Many protesters were seen waving Russian flags, leading authorities to label their actions as treason.
“These young individuals were merely exercising their rights to protest and should not be subjected to such harsh treatment.” A rights group stated.
Human rights advocates are demanding immediate action to secure the release of the detained minors and to uphold their rights.
They emphasise that young people should be protected, not punished for voicing their concerns about governance.
