NAFDAC Warns on Harmful Chemical in Recalled Nivea Deodorant, Urges Consumers to Report Adverse Reactions

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised an alarm over the potential dangers associated with a popular deodorant product in Nigeria.

The agency issued a public safety warning following the recall of Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-On Deodorant (50ml), which bears the label “48H Protection in African Climate.” The recall was initiated after the European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) flagged the product due to the presence of a harmful chemical.

NAFDAC issued the warning on its official X handle and shared it with Africa Health Report (AHR).

“The affected deodorant, bearing batch number 93529610, was manufactured in Germany. It reportedly contains 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde (BMHCA), a compound banned in cosmetics by the EU due to potential health risks. This chemical is associated with possible reproductive harm, risks to unborn children, and can cause skin irritation or burns.

In a public message, NAFDAC cautioned, “Consumers who have purchased this product are strongly advised to discontinue its use immediately and return any stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.” The agency also urged importers, distributors, and retailers to prevent further distribution of the deodorant.

Additionally, NAFDAC encouraged healthcare professionals and consumers to report any adverse effects related to regulated products. Reports can be submitted via the Med-safety app available on Android and iOS, or directly through email at pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng.

Consumers are encouraged to be vigilant about the products they purchase, with NAFDAC reiterating its commitment to public safety.
