The Police Service Commission,(PSC) has said that the the proposed Police Service Commission Training Institute will serve as a global forum for civilian oversight bodies on the police.
PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd) said this on Wednesday at the senate public hearing of the bill to establish the police service commission training Institute at the national assembly in Abuja.
In a statement signed by the PSC spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani on Thursday, Argungu noted that the institute aims to be a central hub for training personnel from Nigeria and countries with similar oversight structures, including Ghana and Canada.
He stated, “It is essential for our staff to understand police operations thoroughly to effectively carry out oversight functions.”
The PSC Chairman called for training standards akin to those established by other oversight bodies, asserting that the institute will ensure adherence to international best practices. “This initiative will make the Commission’s work seamless and result-oriented,” he added.
The hearing was attended by PSC officials, including DIG Taiwo Lakanu and Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, who echoed Argungu’s sentiments.
