US President Joe Biden has reaffirmed his country’s support for Africa having two permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council, with Nigeria as a strong contender.

During a 30-minute phone call with President Bola Tinubu, Biden expressed his commitment to Nigeria’s quest for a permanent seat.

According to Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Biden stated that he sees no reason why Nigeria shouldn’t have a permanent seat, considering its stature and importance in Africa.

“He also reiterated that he does not see any reason why one of those seats should not belong to Nigeria, given its position in Africa, its stature, and its importance,” the minister told reporters.

Africa has long sought equal representation on the 15-member council, currently holding three rotational seats. US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield emphasized the need for permanent seats to enable African countries to fully contribute to the council’s work.

Nigeria’s Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru previously highlighted the country’s commitment to international peace and security, making it a strong candidate for one of the seats.
