The Nigerian Army has issued a statement dismissing claims that insurgents have taken over a military training area in Kontagora, Niger State.
According to the Army in a statement released on Wednesday and signed by Major-General Onyenma Nwachukwu, Director Army Public Relations, reports suggesting that bandits invaded the training area, displacing residents from 23 communities, are entirely false and aimed at inciting unnecessary panic.
A thorough investigation by the Army’s intelligence unit revealed that individuals observed in the area were herders searching for grazing grounds, with no malicious intent detected.
“Reports purporting an invasion of the military training area by alleged bandits and the subsequent displacement of residents from 23 communities across Kontagora and Mariga are not only untrue, but are utterly misleading and harmful, as it appears calculated to incite unnecessary panic in the neighbourhood.
“A thorough investigation by our intelligence unit confirmed that the individuals observed in the area were herders seeking grazing grounds for their herds. No malicious intent was detected, and no hostile actions were observed.”,the statement read.
The Army said it appreciated the vigilance of the communities and the commitment of Honourable Abdullahi Isah to the safety of his constituents but urged caution and verification through official channels.
“While we appreciate the vigilance of the communities and the honourable member’s commitment to the safety of the people he represents, we strongly urge all concerned parties to approach such matters with caution and verify information through official channels, in this case, the Nigerian Army.” the statement said further.
The Nigerian Army assured that its training areas remain secured and fortified, designed to swiftly neutralize any security threat.
“The Nigerian Army remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of our host communities and Nigerians in general.”, it concluded.
In another press statement, the Nigerian Defence Headquarters also dismissed allegations that terrorists have taken over the Military Training Area in Kontagora, Niger State.
According to Defence spokesperson, Major General Edward Buba, reports suggesting the training area has been overrun are entirely false and inaccurate.
General Buba said although troops have encountered terrorists in the area, no part of the training area has been surrendered.
Ongoing clearance operations have effectively denied terrorists freedom of action, and the military is committed to eliminating the threat.
The military emphasized that its operations in Niger State are specifically targeting terrorists, and it’s incorrect to describe these threats in any other way.
The Defence Headquarters assured that it’s working closely with the Niger State Government to enhance security for citizens, and troops are determined to destroy terrorist hideouts.
“The attention of Defence Headquarters has been drawn to media reports making rounds that the Niger State House of Assembly alleged that the Nigerian Army Military Training Area in Kotangora LGA of the state has been taken over by bandits.
Firstly, this headquarters seize the opportunity to unequivocally state that, this allegation is incorrect and in accurate with realities on the ground.”, General Buba said.
