President Bola Tinubu has announced that fisheries and aquaculture will be central to Nigeria’s Blue Economy, aiming for self-sufficiency and major fish exports.
The President’s message was conveyed by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola during the 39th Annual National Conference of the Fisheries Society of Nigeria in Abuja.
“The recent transfer of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture to our ministry shows the President’s commitment to this sector’s vital role in economic diversification,” Oyetola stated.
He emphasised the theme of the conference, “Unlocking The Investment Potential Of Nigeria’s Blue Economy,” aligning it with Tinubu’s vision for expanding economic opportunities.
Oyetola added, “This ministry marks a new era for fisheries and aquaculture. We are committed to achieving self-sufficiency in fish production and positioning Nigeria as a major fish exporter.”
He outlined several initiatives, including improving fisheries management and post-harvest infrastructure.
The Minister noted progress since the department’s transfer, highlighting increased feed production and collaboration with international organisations to enhance exports.
