The Vice Chancellor of Elizade University in Ondo State, Professor Kayode Ijadunola has issued a dire warning about the future of Nigeria’s academic institutions.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday in Ilara-Mokin, he emphasised that escalating electricity costs could lead to the collapse of the university system by 2025 if the government does not take urgent action.
“The cost of power threatens the survival of the university system in 2025 if the current challenge remains unaddressed by the relevant authorities of the government,” Ijadunola stated.
He highlighted that the expenses associated with maintaining power supply have tripled during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, placing an unsustainable burden on universities.
The Vice Chancellor’s remarks come ahead of the university’s 8th and 9th convocation ceremonies, during which he plans to address these pressing issues.
He urged the government to prioritise reforms in energy policy to ensure that academic institutions can thrive.
