A wave of resignations has swept through the traditional leadership of Sabon Birni Local Government Area in Sokoto State, as 19 district and ward heads have stepped down to express their support for Senator Ibrahim Lamido.
The leaders, including prominent figures like the District Head of Sabon Birni, Abdullahi Muhammad Bawa, and ward heads from various communities, cited Senator Lamido’s efforts in combating insecurity as the primary reason for their decision.
They believe that his commitment to the region’s well-being surpasses that of other political leaders.
In a joint press conference, the traditional rulers highlighted the devastating impact of banditry on their communities.
They recounted instances of kidnapping, extortion, and the inability to access farmlands due to the pervasive threat of violence.
They praised Senator Lamido for his initiative in bringing in Civilian JTF forces from Maiduguri to assist in the fight against bandits, which has led to significant improvements in security.
While the resignations have raised eyebrows, the traditional rulers have expressed their willingness to continue serving their communities in other capacities.
They emphasized that their decision was motivated by a genuine desire to support a leader who has demonstrated a genuine commitment to their welfare.
The development has sparked discussions about the role of traditional rulers in contemporary Nigerian politics and the extent to which they can engage in partisan activities.
