At least two individuals have died and 18 others have been hospitalised due to a cholera outbreak in the Kwalmiya community, Kanam District of Plateau State.
The state commissioner for health, Dr. Cletus Shurkuk, confirmed the situation on Saturday, emphasising the need for urgent public health measures.
“This week, we woke up to reports of suspected cholera cases in Kwalmiya, and we mobilized resources immediately,” Shurkuk stated. “Out of 20 affected individuals, we lost two. The remaining 18 received treatment, with 16 already discharged.”
The commissioner reassured the community that health teams are actively working on the ground, providing necessary medical supplies and collaborating with local healthcare facilities. “Our investigation confirmed the suspected cholera cases. We urge citizens to remain vigilant,” he added.
In light of the outbreak, Shurkuk has urged residents to take precautions, including boiling water before use, avoiding open defecation, and ensuring fruits are washed properly. “If anyone notices suspected cases, they must report them to the appropriate authorities promptly. We lost patients because we didn’t receive timely information,” he noted.
