Tragedy struck in the early hours of Friday, October 25, 2024, when a naval personnel, LS Akila A, deployed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Dansadua for Operation FANSAN YAMMA, opened fire under questionable circumstances, killing a fellow military colleague.
This information was contained in a press statement released on Friday by Major-General Edward Buba, Director Defence Media Operations.
The incident reportedly occurred at approximately 3:12 am, and Akila was promptly arrested, disarmed, and detained.
An investigation into the shooting has commenced, and upon completion, the case will be referred to a standing court-martial to address the misconduct.
The Defence Media Operations has urged the media to exercise caution when reporting on this incident to avoid further distress to the family of the deceased.
According to General Buba, the name of the victim is being withheld until the necessary administrative procedures for notifying the next of kin are completed.
He however gave an assistance that the name will be released to the public in due course.
The statement read, “On 25 Oct 2024, at about 0312hrs, a naval personnel, LS Akila A, deployed at FOB Dansadua for Operation FANSAN YAMMA, in questionable circumstances opened fire sporadically killing a fellow military colleague.
“Thereafter, he was arrested, disarmed, detained and investigation has since commenced into the case. After investigation, the case will be escalated to a standing court martial setup to address such misdemeanour among troops.
“Meanwhile, the administrative procedure for notifying the family of the deceased is ongoing. It is for this reason, his name is not yet released to the public.
“Nevertheless, the name will be released in due course.
Accordingly, we urge the media to exercise caution in reporting in order not to further demoralise the family of the deceased, please.”
