Ogun Residents Urged to Relocate over Flash Flooding

Korede Abdullah in Lagos

The Ogun State Government has issued a warning to residents of flooded areas to relocate to higher ground immediately, following the recent release of water from Oyan Dam.

This directive comes after the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority (ORBDA) released excess water from the dam, causing flooding in several areas, including Isheri, Riverview Estate, Oshorun Estate, OPIC Estate, Arepo, Mawere, Akute, Alagbole, Orimerunmu, and Magboro.

According to Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, the release of excess water from the dam was unavoidable to prevent more severe damage.

However, he assured residents that the floodwater would start receding significantly from Friday, October 25, through waterways, watercourses, and canals dredged and provided for that purpose.

This reassurance comes as a relief to affected residents, who have been dealing with the aftermath of the flooding.

Residents are advised to take necessary precautions and relocate to safer areas until the floodwater recedes.
