Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has released its latest Air Quality Index, revealing Agege and Surulere as the areas with the most hazardous and unhealthy air quality in Nigeria’s economic capital.

Agege topped the list with a hazardous rating of 103%, indicating suboptimal air quality for residents, while Surulere followed closely with a very unhealthy rating of 76.1%.

Other areas with unhealthy air quality include Mushin, LAMATA Kosefe, and Lagos Port at Apapa, with ratings of 47.3%, 46%, and 36.4%, respectively.

Meanwhile, Badagry and Moloney Street were marked as unhealthy for sensitive groups, with ratings of 23.8% and 20.7%. On the other hand, Egbeda, NIMET Oshodi, General Hospital Ikeja, and LSDPC Est, Lagos Island had moderate air quality ratings ranging from 12.1% to 15.7%.

In stark contrast, Lekki boasted the best air quality with a rating of 10.1%. This significant disparity highlights the need for targeted efforts to improve air quality across the state.

LASEPA has reassured Lagos residents that it is working diligently to enhance the state’s air quality, acknowledging the critical importance of clean air for public health.

The poor air quality in Lagos can be attributed to various factors, including vehicle emissions, industrial activities, and domestic energy use.

Nigeria ranks as the 10th most polluted country in Africa, with an air pollution rate of 44.8%. To mitigate this, residents are advised to take precautions, such as wearing masks, reducing outdoor exercise, and using air purifiers.
