The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has charged Blessing Amaka David-Agwa, a fraudulent fertility nurse, with 45 counts of impersonation, forgery, and obtaining money under false pretences.
David-Agwa appeared before Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court in Enugu.
This information was contained in a press statement released on Tuesday by Dele Oyewale, the EFCC Head, Media & Publicity.
The charges allege that David-Agwa defrauded numerous women by posing as a medical fertility nurse, claiming she could help them conceive easily. Counts 41 and 24 specifically state that she obtained N1.6 million and N1.25 million from two victims, Okenwa Joy Chiamaka and Amarachi Okpala, respectively.
Count 41 of the charge reads: “That you, Blessing Amaka David-Agwa sometime in 2024 in Enugu, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria with intent to defraud, did obtain the total sum of One Million, Six Hundred Thousand Naira (N1, 600, 000. 00) only from one Okenwa Joy Chiamaka, under the pretence of being a Medical Fertility Nurse (Specially trained to assist women get pregnant with ease) which pretext you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act”.
David-Agwa pleaded not guilty to all charges. EFCC counsel Blessing N. Obasi requested a trial date and remand at the Enugu State Correctional Facility.
However, defence attorney G. C. Madubuegwu presented a bail motion, citing Section 162 and 165 (1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
Obasi opposed the bail request, highlighting the severity of the charges and the emotional distress caused to the victims.
After considering both arguments, Justice Umar adjourned the case to November 12, 2024, for a ruling on the bail application and remanded David-Agwa in custody.
Investigations revealed that David-Agwa forged her Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria certificate and University of Nigeria, Nsukka diploma. She allegedly used these documents to impersonate a qualified medical fertility nurse, deceiving over 45 innocent women.
