CAN Opposes Church Signpost Tax, Demands Immediate Reversal

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Abia State has strongly condemned a new state policy requiring churches to pay taxes on their signposts.

In a statement dated October 22, signed by state CAN chairman Rev. Ojo Ojo Uduma and secretary Rev. Francis Okere, the association called for an immediate reversal of the decision.

“The taxation of church signposts is an unwarranted burden on religious institutions,”the statement read.

CAN warned that this policy could portray the state government as adversarial towards churches, potentially straining the long-standing relationship between religious organisations and the government.

The association urged officials to reconsider their approach, emphasising the importance of understanding the impact of such measures on faith communities. “Leadership of the Christian body in the state can be invited for a round table discussion on the way forward over this very little but delicate issue,” they suggested.
