NECO Warns Against Proxy Enrolment for Examinations

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has issued a stern warning to school owners and stakeholders against enrolling candidates for its exams by proxy.

In a statement released Monday, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani emphasised the seriousness of the issue, stating, “We have observed that such fraudulent practices often lead to identity theft and the issuance of fake results.”

NECO is committed to eradicating examination malpractice and has implemented several measures to prevent impersonation during exams.

These include the use of biometric data capturing devices, customised answer booklets, and the inclusion of candidates’ photographs and birth dates on official certificates.

Sani also highlighted the importance of verification, mentioning the NECO e-Verify platform launched last year, stating, “Any certificate that cannot be authenticated using the NECO e-Verify platform is fake.”

The Council urged state ministries of education and school owners to register only the personal details of genuine candidates for all NECO-conducted exams.

NECO further that candidates found guilty of impersonation during the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination had their results withheld, reinforcing its robust policy against malpractice. “These measures are essential in maintaining the integrity of our examinations,” Sani added.
