NNPC Trains 1,000 Auto Mechanics on CNG Conversion, Prepares for Cleaner Energy Transition

In an effort to accelerate Nigeria’s shift towards more sustainable energy, NNPC Retail Ltd has taken a significant step by training over 1,000 auto mechanics in vehicle conversion from gasoline to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

This effort is part of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s (NNPC) wider plan to encourage the use of CNG as a cleaner, more affordable alternative to gasoline.

This was revealed in a statement released on Saturday by NNPC spokesperson Olufemi Soneye, via the company’s official X account.

The training, which took place during the National Artisans and Technicians Conference in Lagos, provided mechanics with practical skills for performing CNG conversions, marking a significant step in advancing Nigeria’s energy objectives.

Speaking about the initiative, Baba Shettima Kukawa, Executive Director of Retail Operations & Mobility at NNPC Retail, noted, “Educating mechanics on CNG adoption is essential to achieving Nigeria’s long-term energy goals.”

Mechanics’ associations across the country, including the Motor Mechanics and Technicians Association of Nigeria (MOMTAN) and the Nigeria Automobile Technicians Association (NATA), praised the initiative.

They urged for a wider scope and additional programs to ensure that mechanics nationwide are prepared to facilitate the shift to cleaner energy.
