Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, is celebrating a major milestone today – his 90th birthday! The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, is leading the tributes, congratulating General Gowon on behalf of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The congratulatory message was contained in a press statement released on Saturday by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director Defence Information.
General Gowon was described as playing a pivotal role in promoting peace and unity in Nigeria during his tenure as Head of State from 1966 to 1975.
His leadership helped navigate the country through its most turbulent period, including the Nigerian Civil War. His famous “no victor, no vanquished” speech at the war’s end was a powerful call for healing and reconciliation, and his commitment to peace has endured through his NGO, the Yakubu Gowon Foundation.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria are honoring General Gowon’s legacy, recognizing his exemplary service, discipline, dedication, and patriotism. His vision for a united Nigeria continues to inspire generations of Nigerians, both military personnel and civilians alike.
The statement read in part, “The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa OFR on behalf of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) join other well-wishers to warmly congratulate General Yakubu Gowon GCFR, former Head of State and elder statesman, as he marks his 90th birthday.
“The CDS noted with delight that as the Nigeria’s Head of State from 1966 to 1975, General Gowon played a key role in promoting and maintaining Nigeria’s peace and unity despite all the challenges of the period.
“Indeed, General Gowon’s exemplary service and leadership have left an indelible mark in the history of Nigeria.
“It is on record that his vision and commitment on peace and national reconciliation since his famous speech ‘no victor, no vanquish’ at the end of the Nigeria’s civil war have contributed greatly for a stable and prosperous Nigeria.
“As a detribalized Nigerian and peace ambassador, it is worthy to mention that General Gowon has sustained his good work to humanity through his NGO, the Yakubu Gowon Foundation.”
