In a recent report, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has announced a 4.19% increase in cooking gas prices over the last month, reflecting ongoing inflationary pressures.
The average price for a 5kg cylinder rose from N6,430.02 in August to N6,699.63 in September 2024. This marks a staggering 59.90% year-on-year increase from N4,189.96 in September 2023.
According to the report released on Friday, Rivers State recorded the highest average price at N7,285.71, followed closely by Gombe at N7,271.88.
In contrast, Kebbi offered the lowest price at N5,950.00. The North-East region reported the highest average retail price for a 5kg cylinder at N6,929.02.
“The data reflects significant year-on-year changes that affect household budgets.”
For the 12.5kg cylinder, prices increased by 4.89% month-on-month, from N15,552.56 to N16,313.43, marking a 76.41% rise from September 2023.
Rivers again topped the list with an average price of N17,992.86, while Adamawa recorded the lowest at N13,983.33.
The NBS also noted a rise in kerosene prices, with the average per litre climbing to N1,957.44—up 5.97% from August and 50.68% from last year. Abuja recorded the highest price at N2,816.67 per litre, while Bayelsa had the lowest at N1,416.67.
