NBS Worries over Surging Food Prices in Sokoto, Northern States as Poverty Level Soars

Food prices in Nigeria have soared to alarming levels, with Sokoto State experiencing the sharpest increase, a staggering 50.5%, according to the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The report reveals that Gombe and Yobe also recorded significant food price hikes, at 44.1% and 43.5%, respectively, pointing to a nationwide inflation crisis.

States in the northern region, including Jigawa, Borno, and Kebbi, saw similarly sharp rises, with food prices increasing by over 40% in each. Southern states like Edo and Abia were also hit hard, with food inflation rates of 42.5% and 40.9%, respectively.

The NBS data paints a grim picture for households across the country, raising concerns about food security and the purchasing power of consumers. Abuja, Kaduna, and Oyo States also experienced substantial food price increases, further highlighting the widespread economic strain.

With food inflation climbing at such rates, many Nigerians fear that the rising cost of living could exacerbate poverty levels and further erode household income.
