Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has made a trail-blazing announcement that his government will pay workers a minimum wage of N85,000, exceeding the federal minimum wage of N70,000.

This revelation came during an interview on Channels TV’s “One-On-One with Babajide Sanwo-Olu” on Wednesday evening monitored by Africa Health Report (AHR).

Sanwo-Olu emphasized that this decision wasn’t driven by competition but by affordability and capacity.

He expressed his desire to provide a living wage for Lagos workers, ensuring they receive “commensurate things that will take them home, not drop them at the bus stop.”

But that’s not all – the governor has set his sights on increasing the minimum wage to N100,000 by January 2025. This move demonstrates his commitment to workers’ welfare and his vision for a better quality of life in Lagos.

This development comes as state governments and organized labor negotiate the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage.

Other states, like Oyo and Ogun, are also making strides in this direction. Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde has pledged to pay the N70,000 minimum wage once consequential salary adjustments are addressed, while Ogun Governor Dapo Abiodun has approved a minimum wage of N77,000.

These developments signal a positive shift in workers’ compensation across Nigeria, reflecting governors’ efforts to prioritize their employees’ well-being.
