In a bid to alleviate transportation challenges in Lagos State, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has launched 3,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) commercial tricycles worth N10.2 billion.
This initiative, unveiled by Alhaji Azeez Abiola, Zonal Chairman of the Tricycle Owners and Operators Association of Nigeria under the NURTW, promises to bring relief to residents by reducing transportation costs.
According to Abiola, the CNG tricycles will not only ease transportation costs but also help mitigate economic hardship.
“With these tricycles, residents will experience reduced transportation costs within their locality,” he said. The 3,000 CNG tricycles are set to begin operations today.
This development is part of a broader effort to transition Nigeria’s transportation sector to cleaner and more affordable fuels, as seen in the Federal Government’s Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI), which aims to roll out 2,700 CNG-powered buses and tricycles.
The PCNGI includes the creation of 100 conversion workshops and 60 refueling stations across 18 states, ensuring the success of the program.
The benefits of CNG vehicles are numerous, including lower fares for commuters, reduced air pollution, and job creation in manufacturing, operation, and maintenance.
With this launch, Lagos State residents can look forward to a more affordable and environmentally friendly transportation system.
