Jigawa Tanker Explosion: Death Toll Rises to 167 as NSIB Launches Investigation

The death toll from a devastating tanker explosion in Jigawa State has risen to 157, according to authorities, as the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into the incident.

The explosion occurred on Tuesday night when a petrol tanker overturned and burst into flames near Majia town, Taura Local Government Area. Residents who had gathered to collect fuel from the spilled tanker were caught in the resulting inferno.

The NSIB, in a statement released on Thursday, confirmed that a team of experts had been deployed to the scene to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and the subsequent explosion.

The team will assess the causal factors and provide safety recommendations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this devastating accident,” said Captain Alex Badeh Jr., Director General of the NSIB.

“The NSIB is committed to uncovering the cause of the explosion and ensuring that safety lessons are learned.”

The agency also urged citizens to avoid approaching accident scenes, particularly when involving tankers carrying flammable substances, emphasizing the grave dangers posed by such actions.

As the investigation continues, the NSIB will provide updates on its findings and recommendations.
