Nigeria Launches New Basic Education Curriculum in 2025

The Federal Ministry of Education has announced that a new curriculum for basic education will roll out in schools nationwide by January 2025.

Education Minister, Professor Tahir Mamman shared the news on Monday during a stakeholders meeting in Abuja, stating that the senior secondary education curriculum will follow in September 2025.

“The new curriculum will address learning crises and improve employability,” said Mamman, emphasising the introduction of skills acquisition that will equip students with essential 21st-century skills.

He noted a three-month preparatory phase to develop teachers’ guides for effective implementation.

Director of Curriculum at the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Dr. Garba Gandu, highlighted that the curriculum aims to enhance global competitiveness. “We are introducing 15 new trade subjects, including basic digital literacy and vocational entrepreneurship skills,” he explained.

Among the new subjects are building and construction, plumbing, hair styling, and GSM repairs. “These skills will prepare students for real-world challenges,” Gandu added, underscoring the curriculum’s focus on practical, hands-on learning.
