Nigeria’s national grid system has collapsed once again, resulting in a nationwide blackout. The Monday evening occurrence marked the sixth grid failure in 2024, leaving millions household without electricity.
According to findings by Africa Health Report (AHR), all distribution companies are currently receiving no power from the grid, rendering their feeders inactive.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the disruption in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), apologizing to its customers for the inconvenience.
“This is to inform our esteemed customers that the current outage being experienced across our network is due to a national grid collapse,” the statement read, “Dear Esteemed Customer, The current supply interruption is due to a system collapse of the Nationa grid, which occurred at 18:48hrs today. As a result, we are unable to provide power to our customers in the FCT, Kogi, Nasarawa and Niger States. We are awaiting restoration of supply from the National Control Center, Osogbo. Thank you for your understanding”. The message was delivered at exactly 9:52 PM. AHR checks would show.
The grid collapse has sparked widespread frustration, with many Nigerians taking to social media to express their discontent.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) have yet to comment on the cause of the collapse or provide a timeline for restoration.
This latest grid failure underscores Nigeria’s ongoing struggles with power supply, highlighting the need for urgent reforms and investments in the country’s electricity infrastructure.
