Unspecified numbers of school children and passengers were reported dead in an early morning road accident at Oke-Elesin, Amuloko, in the Ona-Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State, claimed a primary school pupil and her mother, on Monday.
The horrific crash involved two trucks loaded with soda drinks and tiles, and two tricycles (Keke Marwa), after one of the trucks lost control while descending the steep Oke-Elesin hill, running over other vehicles.
Eyewitnesses reported that six victims died on the spot, while several others were critically injured and rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
According to Dr. Raji Wale, Managing Director of Amuloko City Hospital, four patients were brought to his hospital, including two children who remain hospitalized.
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Sector Commander in Oyo State, Mrs. Rosemary Alo, confirmed the accident, pending an official briefing from field officers.
Security operatives have restored order to the area, ensuring a smooth flow of traffic.
“This tragic incident highlights the need for improved road safety measures and regular vehicle maintenance,” said Dr. Raji Wale.
The FRSC has urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent such accidents, saying an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
