5.35% Increase in DISCOs’ Customer Base, Surpassing 12.99M in Q2 – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that customer numbers for electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) grew by 5.35% in the second quarter of 2024, reaching 12.99 million, up from 12.33 million in the first quarter of the year.

On a year-on-year basis, this reflects a 13.24% increase from the 11.47 million recorded in the second quarter of 2023.

The NBS disclosed this in its latest report, released on Monday. The report also highlighted a slight increase in the number of metered customers, rising by 0.25% quarter-on-quarter, from 5.91 million in Q1 2024 to 5.92 million in Q2 2024. On a yearly basis, this represents an 8.18% growth from 5.47 million in the same period in 2023.

Meanwhile, the number of estimated customers saw a more significant rise, reaching 7.07 million in Q2 2024, a 10.04% increase from 6.43 million in the previous quarter, and a year-on-year rise of 17.86% from 6.00 million in Q2 2023.

In terms of revenue, DISCOs collected a total of N391.72 billion in the second quarter of 2024, marking a sharp increase from N291.62 billion in Q1 2024. This represents a 48.90% surge compared to the N263.08 billion collected in Q2 2023.

Despite the financial gains, electricity supply saw a slight decline. Total supply for Q2 2024 was recorded at 5,612.52 gigawatt-hours (GWh), down from 5,769.52 GWh in Q1 2024, and a 5.03% decrease from 5,909.83 GWh in the second quarter of 2023.
