Nigerian Army Investigates Police Officer’s Death, Arrests Soldier

The Nigerian Army’s 81 Division has commenced an investigation into an incident that resulted in the death of a policeman.

The army has apprehended the soldier involved, handing him over to the Military Police.

The tragic incident occurred in Lagos on October 9, resulting in the death of a police officer following an altercation with a soldier over an alleged traffic rule violation.

This information was contained in a press statement released on Thursday and signed by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Deputy Director Army Public Relations 81 Division NA.

The Army expressed regret over the incident, emphasizing its commitment to upholding the Nigerian Army Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement.

The General Officer Commanding 81 Division extended condolences to the deceased’s family and the Nigeria Police, assuring a thorough investigation and appropriate disciplinary action.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with other security agencies to ensure public safety and security, in line with its constitutional mandate.

The statement read in part, “The soldier suspected to have committed the offence has since been apprehended and handed over to the Military Police for investigation and further disciplinary procedures.

“The incident is highly regrettable, given the Division’s commitment to the Nigerian Army Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement. The Nigerian Army has continuously sensitized its personnel not to engage in activities that would tarnish its image and not bridge the trust with other security agencies as well as the civil populace.

“The General Officer Commanding 81 Division NA commiserates with the family of the deceased and the Nigeria Police on this unfortunate incident.

“The Division reassures the general public that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken to ensure that justice is served.”
