Former Nigerian President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has commended an initiative by the Kano State government along with private organisations to address food insecurity, hunger.
Obasanjo who was represented by Mr. Vitalis Otese, commended the partnership between the Kano State Government, Islamic Development Bank, and SAA.
He noted the project as a successful model that could be replicated in other states.
The Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project (KSADP) and the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) have empowered the farmers in Kano with mechanized equipment to boost agricultural productivity.
Speaking at the event, Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by his deputy, urged beneficiaries to make effective use of the equipment.
The distribution, which took place on Monday during a high-level workshop on agricultural transformation, included combine harvesters, Hijet vehicles, knapsack sprayers, solar-powered pumps, welding and fabrication kits, and other essential farm tools.
Funded by the Islamic Development Bank, Lives and Livelihoods Fund, and KSADP, this initiative aims to address challenges such as low productivity, poor soils, and climate change.
Dr. Amit Roy, Chairman of SAA, highlighted the association’s commitment to fostering innovation and resilience in agriculture through technology.
SAA Nigeria Country Director Dr. Godwin Atser expressed gratitude to attendees and encouraged continued collaboration.
Habiba Muhammad, a beneficiary who received a Hijet vehicle, expressed her appreciation for the support provided by the project.
The workshop served as a platform for sharing lessons, fostering collaboration, and exploring future funding opportunities to expand the project’s successes beyond Kano.
