The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), in collaboration with key organisations, has taken steps to harmonise Nigeria’s food labelling practices with international standards.
This initiative aims to empower consumers and strengthen confidence in the food supply chain.
In a statement released on Monday, NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stressed that adhering to Codex food labelling standards is essential for enhancing food safety and consumer awareness. “These standards eliminate misleading descriptions and provide crucial information about ingredients and allergens,” Adeyeye stated. “Compliance facilitates access to international markets, reduces legal risks, and enhances competitiveness.”
Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, Director General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of unified representation at the Codex Committee. “Nigerians must articulate our position on the global platform effectively,” he said, underscoring the need for a coordinated approach.
The CEO of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Dr. (Mrs.) Nonye Ayeni, commended the alignment of national standards with global best practices. “This is crucial for our non-oil exports to compete globally,” she affirmed, highlighting the economic implications of these changes.
