The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has announced a significant transformation in Nigeria’s fuel consumption and production landscape for 2023, marked by a notable decline in the distribution of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and a rise in domestic production of other fuel types.
According to the NBS report, the volume of PMS trucked across the country totaled 20.22 billion liters in 2023, representing a 16.96% decrease from 24.35 billion liters in 2022. Additionally, the import volume of PMS fell to 20.30 billion liters, a decline of 13.77% from 23.54 billion liters in the previous year.
The report, shared on NBS’s official X handle and made available to the Africa Health Report (AHR), highlights a contrasting trend in household kerosene (HHK) production, which surged to 69.71 million liters in 2023—an impressive 56.02% increase from 44.68 million liters in 2022.
Similarly, production of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) rose to 109.39 million liters, up from 102.47 million liters in 2022, reflecting a 6.76% increase. However, the importation of AGO saw a significant jump of 23.66%, with 4.94 billion liters imported in 2023 compared to 4.00 billion liters in 2022.
These shifts underscore evolving energy consumption patterns in Nigeria and the country’s ongoing reliance on imported fuel.
The NBS report states, “The 2023 figures indicate both a reduction in PMS consumption and an increased reliance on local production for certain fuels like household kerosene and automotive gas oil.”
