Kano Doctors to Go on Strike over Healthcare Issues October 1

The National Association of Government General and Medical Dental Practitioners (NAGMDP) has announced plans for a strike starting October 1, citing worsening healthcare conditions in Kano State.

Dr. Anas Idris Hassan, the association’s secretary, disclosed this on Saturday, expressing deep concerns over the doctor-to-patient ratio, which stands at one doctor for every 33,000 patients, significantly below World Health Organisation standards. “With an estimated 20 million residents, the lack of medical staff is alarming,” he said.

Hassan revealed that despite a June agreement with the Kano State Government, key demands remain unmet. “We have yet to receive the post-COVID-19 hazard allowance, which has been provided to federal doctors since 2021,”he added. “This delay has contributed to growing dissatisfaction among medical practitioners in the state.”

He also criticised the state’s failure to pay salaries to newly employed doctors hired in September 2023, further straining the healthcare system. “These young professionals are left without compensation, undermining our ability to attract and retain talent,” Hassan stated.

He pointed to the deteriorating infrastructure within Kano hospitals, which lack essential medical equipment. “Patients are suffering due to the government’s neglect of our facilities,” he said.
