*ASUU Slams Administrative Lapses
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bauchi Zone, has expressed deep concern over the departure of 30 PhD holders from Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) due to poor working conditions and inadequate welfare.
This alarming trend was discussed during a press conference on Friday.
Zonal Coordinator, Namo Timothy stated, “The absence of an employee exit policy has forced many of our best scholars to seek opportunities elsewhere.”
He stressed the lack of a pension or death benefit scheme, which contributes to job insecurity for faculty members, saying, “Without these provisions, our members feel insecure about their future,” he added.
ASUU criticised SAZU’s administration for failing to pay over 650 million naira in accumulated entitlements, including academic allowances and honorariums for internal examiners.
Timothy said, “Despite generating significant revenue from postgraduate programs, our members have not been compensated for their contributions.”
The union also noted issues such as steep increases in student fees and inadequate staff training initiatives. “The University claims there are no funds to pay our members, yet it continues to impose higher charges on students,” Timothy noted.
They further condemned the prolonged tenure of the current Pro-Chancellor, urging adherence to established laws regarding appointments. Timothy stressed, “This situation creates an environment lacking accountability and progressive policies.”
In response to these challenges, ASUU is calling on the Bauchi State Government and stakeholders to urgently address staff welfare, including establishing a comprehensive exit policy. “Unless these issues are resolved, we cannot guarantee industrial harmony within SAZU,” Timothy warned.
